Computer recycling

Submitted by Randall@imte... on Thu, 07/31/2008 - 7:47am.
I have found several companies that are "approved" to recycle electronic materials but only one in my area that was both registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), as a Class D universal waste recycling facility. New Jersey Class D facilities are permitted to process electronics materials and are stringently audited to ensure compliance with highest environmental handling standards. (NJDEP) This facility is also NAID AAA Certified as a secure data destruction facility for hard drive destruction. (They help with all the nasty auditing details found with both areas). Anyway, this facility doesn't ship material to Asia and forget about it - it's shipped to a plant in Denmark where they not only will account for their recovery stream but they also make money! They provided information on the major players that are found in electronic "junk". “Typical” material make up of computing related components. SOURCE: TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK The units have been converted to "American" MATERIAL LBS/TON PLASTICS 600, COPPER 286, IRON 90, BROMINE 56, LEAD 54, TIN 44, NICKEL 40, ANTIMONY 22, ZINC 9, SILVER 1, GOLD 1, CADMIUM 0.79, TANTALUM 0.38, MOLYBDENUM 0.31, PALLADIUM 0.25, BERYLLIUM 0.18, COBALT 0.17, CERIUM 0.1, PLATINUM 0.07, LANTHANUM 0.06, MERCURY 0.02, I like that "pound" of Gold.... Computer recycling

The Europeans seem to be ahead of us in the recycling arena along with climate control etc. Good information on computer recycling. Avoiding another Love Canal by understanding where your discarded materials actually go, not just taking the quick path to disposal, is critical. Thanks for the update. Trish
