    About IPA

    History

Our history is that of an association on the move, embracing the industry's leading edge and driving innovation.

    1896
The National Association of Photo-Engravers, organized with 67 members.

    1941–1950
Photoengravers Research Association (PERI) founded with 42 members. The Photoplatemakers Association and PERI form an Alliance.

    1951–1960
PERI wins powder-less copper etching patent, establishing the association as a cutting-edge industry leader. First annual Management Conference is held.

    1961–1970
The Alliance establishes proofing standards in paper, ink, and color design for letterpress publications. PERI produces reference color bar prints.

    1971–1980
PERI officially merges with the International Photoplatemakers Association.

    1981–1990
The International Photoplatemakers Association coins the word "prepress" and changes its name to International Prepress Association to better reflect its members' business. IPA helps establish standards for the exchange of electronic data. Graphic Preparatory Association members join IPA.

    1991–2003
IPA releases studies on the changing role of prepress companies. It launches an online portal, updates the industry-leading Economic Study, and introduces Web-based learning to the industry. IPA becomes the primary distributor for information and products related to industry standards and specifications. Annual Technical Conference becomes the premier event for the exchange of digital workflow and technology information.

    2004–2006
IPA leads its members into the new age of full-service graphic solutions providers, where the industry's leading technical managers join forces to strengthen graphics workflow competencies and increase profits.

    2006–2008
Creative agencies, printers and new-media based visual communication companies join IPA's core group of premedia service providers to grow the ranks of IPA membership. IPA offers innovation programs such as e-LEAN™, Great Customer Service, 10-Steps to Solution Selling, Color Management Professional Certification Program, and other programs to help IPA members achieve more efficient digital workflows and grow their service offerings and profits.
